What is the UK ETA?
The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital entry permission issued by the UK Home Office. Since 25 February 2026 it is mandatory for Swiss citizens and travellers from most visa-exempt countries — with the exception of Irish citizens and holders of existing UK visas.
The ETA is not a visa but a pre-check performed before travel. It permits tourism, family visits and certain business stays of up to 6 months per entry.

Requirements
- Valid biometric passport (with a machine-readable zone)
- Recent portrait (max. 3 months old, plain light background, no filters)
- Accurately completed application with truthful answers
- No outstanding entry bans or undisclosed material convictions
What the official application asks
The UK application covers eight areas: personal data, passport data, contact and residential address, biometric portrait, passport data page, and yes/no questions on criminal record, immigration history and security-related links. All data is transmitted electronically to GOV.UK.

When the ETA is not enough
The ETA does not cover:
- Paid work in the UK (except for narrow exceptions such as the Permitted Paid Engagement route)
- Stays longer than 6 months
- Study longer than 6 months
- Getting married or entering a civil partnership in the UK (this requires a Marriage Visitor Visa)
